Changing the icon for ship types

I am trying to figure out how to change what a ship shows up as in the ship designer or on the screen.  Don't really care what it looks like when I design the ship (in fact I prefer not to spend hours designing a new ship for my mods), but it would be awesome to modify how the ship looks in game (via the icon to display the ship).  Any suggestions on how to do that?  Kinda of at an impasse at this point.
