When adding a a "Improvement" from the LEFT panel in the planet screen, dose that REPLACE the tile bonus? (confused about adjacency)

When you place the improvements that are on the LEFT... does that override the tile bonus?
Say I have a "Research Tile" with "+3" research on it and I want to put a "Capital Mainframe" on it...
What happens to the +3? Like is Research "23" now on that tile? Like if I build this NEXT to the +3 the +2 Adjacency Bonus will make that tile a +5.... so? Yeah... confused about adjacency.
