Ship Veterancy

I am being overwhelmed by the veterancy ships are currently earning in combat. It has not been unusual to see a ship gain 5 levels after one engagement. Then you have to click on that ship, over and over again, to apply the upgrade, one at a time. I currently have ships that have levels over 70, with hit points nearing 500 (medium hull), and it has been a slog having to stop play and perform these upgrades. Is this a glitch or an undeveloped part of the game? Will we be getting better ship and fleet management tools in the final game?
